Sideways disinheritance

This sounds complicated, but it is a real risk to families, for instance, imagine that you pass away first and your spouse/civil partner meets someone else. They get married/have a civil partnership and carry on in life together. When your spouse/civil partner suddenly dies without having made a Will, the children from your relationship all of a sudden find that their rightful inheritance has legally gone to the survivor through the law of Intestacy. Your own children could get nothing.

It is a common occurence where adults are on their second, third etc. relationship, and have children from a previous relationship.

The other issue here is that if you are on a second relationship, whether married or in a civil partnership (or not), if you have made just basic Wills (say) leaving everything to each other and then equally to all the children. Trusting each other to carry this out is one thing, but a disagreement after the first death with one or more of the deceased partners’ children, could lead to the survivor cutting out your children altogether.
