1. Peace of mind. Make life easier for those left behind and you can rest assured that your loved ones will be well provided for and have less mess to worry about if you do
2. Your next of kin will not automatically inherit everything when you die, so write a Will for certainty
3. There is no such thing as a ‘common law spouse’ so if you are not married or not in a civil partnership, you are treated as single people and your partner will not benefit from your estate which may create serious financial problems for the survivor
4. Have your say and record what you want to happen, particularly if (for example) you have separate and your ex-partner now lives with someone else. If you get married or enter into a civil partnership, this will invalidate your current Will so you need to make a new one
5. If you have children under 18, you should appoint legal guardians otherwise the law will decide who will look after them. Godparents are not automatically appointed and have no legal responsibility for your children either before or after your death
6. If you have disabled or elderly dependents that are financially supported by State benefits, your Will can set up a trust to protect your legacy to them and prevent the Local Authority from getting it
7. If you run your own business, appointing a business trustee can ensure that it continues to thrive and support your family and those of your employees
8. Protect and preserve your estate with some clever planning to prevent the Local Authority from using it to pay for your care home fees later in life, and consider organising your financial affairs in such a way to help your family cope with inheritance tax
9. "I know I need to make a Will, I'll get around to it", do not be one of the 7 out of 10 people without a Will and remember to review it and keep it up to date
10. Why not feel good and leave some money to your favourite charity
